These particular king size beds are in extremely high demand nationwide and we consider ourselves fortunate to be able to represent several examples in this style every year. Often this styled bed, which fits the traditional Chippendale design, will be claimed quickly by a prospective buyer as they are among the highest quality king sized beds available from the past few generations. Antique beds are often too small for the needs of most people and in the modern era the options available for Queen or King size bed frames are typically of low quality or designed to be discarded after a number of years. Premium furniture manufacturers such as Baker, Henkel Harris, & Councill Craftsman produced these "Rice Carved Beds" decades ago for the discerning collectors willing to pay an exorbitant rate for the best beds available. As time has past the original manufacturing and marketing costs are negated and we can price these beds well within the reach of ordinary consumers. While this bed does not have any apparent labels or relevant production markings we believe it to be a product of The Councill Craftsman furniture company based on identical beds we have sold previously branded by that maker.
The iconic design of the "Rice Carved" bed is taken directly from the earliest beds made for the plantation homes near Charleston, South Carolina centuries ago. Collectors have long held these timeless designs to be the preeminent form ever made and for this reason the leading American furniture makers of the past half century have adapted this design along with "Tobacco Leaf" carvings for their highest lines of premium bed frames. Each bed post is richly carved with varying elements of acanthus leaves and rice patterns with robust tall reeded posts which are topped by turned finials. A series of eight threaded bed bolts are employed to create a strong and lasting connection at each of the intersecting places that comprise the bed frame. These bolts are concealed by elegant bed bolt covers and are designed to allow for easy assembly and disassembly which is an important consideration. Often lesser made beds make no allowance for those who may have to move or simply do not have the interior space to bring a fully assembled headboard up a staircase or around tight corners and through door frames. Every aspect of this bed is designed and comprised of the highest quality materials and built with ingenuity for the practical needs of any person.
This bed measures 87" long x 82 3/4" wide x 87" tall overall. The interior measurements for bedding measure 80" long x 78 1/4" wide. The headboard height is 44" tall off the ground. The top of each bed rail is 22 1/2" tall off the floor and there is 17" of clearance height from the bottom of the bed rail to the ground.
