Vintage Carved & Painted Godwit Shorebird Decoy / Wood Carving
Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic vintage carved & painted shorebird decoy. We’re not sure of the exact species but it looks like either a Godwit or a Yellow Legs to us. The bill is made from a piece of driftwood and old iron tacks were used for the eyes. We purchased this from a central MA home with decoys ranging from the late 19th century to the 1980’s. This is definitely one of the older ones from the collection but we’re not sure the exact date it was made. The body has remnants of a faded red paint with black spots in the plumage. The plumage on the back is black with white spots. A single dowel was used for the legs and the decoy is mounted on an oblong wood stand. The base measures 5 1/2” wide x 3 1/8” deep. The decoy measures 9 1/2” wide from bill to tail x 2” deep x 10 1/4” tall including the stand.
