PAIR OF ANTIQUE VICTORIAN RENAISSANCE REVIVAL PIERCED CARVED WALNUT SIDE CHAIRS
With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exquisite pair of antique side chairs. These chairs were both hand crafted in the late 19th century Victorian period in the manner of the high style Renaissance and Elizabethan periods from centuries before. The Renaissance Revival movement is one sequence in the greater Aesthetic movement of the later half of the Victorian era. During the late 19th century classically trained carvers and furniture makers were proliferating within larger American cities resulting in an over saturation of expertly trained craftsmen. As a direct result of these artisans contending for work, areas of this country, particularly the northeast, were bestowed with awe inspiring architecture, art, and fine furniture which defined the absolute peak of refinement before industrialization came to replace artistic workmanship. These pair of chairs are a product of an era long past and remain as stunning as the day they were first made.
These chairs feature some of the most elegant carving work we have ever come across. Within the elaborate carving work are wonderfully carved floral designed panels and surrounding both panels are incredible pierced carved foliate elements. A central scallop shell motif is prominently carved into the crests and centers of both ornamental lower chair rail. The chair uprights are crafted with baluster turnings between bellflower and floral carved blocks and have two well formed ball finials. These chairs are quite sturdy with strength provided by a turned stretcher base. The front legs are remarkable with expertly carved lion paw feet. Both chairs frames have developed a beautiful walnut color over the past century and a half. The seats are fashioned with a wonderful crewel worked design that has remained in fine condition. There are some stains spotted on the fabric which we left alone. Each chair is in excellent condition overall and remain a perfect option for anyone searching for a special pair of antique chairs.
