We’re pleased to offer for sale this wonderful pair of antique Victorian carved parlor chairs. The chairs need to be reupholstered, but most importantly the frames are in excellent condition and exhibit an unusual form making them superior to most parlor chairs that we encounter. The chairs were made during the second half of the 19th century and were likely made in New York City. The chairs have rolled crests with fantastic bull’s eye or roundel carvings on each end. Emanating from the roundels there are shallow incised carvings along the stiles which we commonly encounter on New York City Victorian furniture. The front face of the stiles are reeded and continue down onto the supports that jut out into the seats. The front seat rail has the same carvings oriented horizontally with punched circles on the scrolled panel below.

Without a doubt the most striking and unique feature of the chairs are the carved back splats. The center of the splats have a carved roundel design similar to the ones on the edge of the crests with a carved acanthus leaf and bellflower protruding from them amid a punch carved field. With some new upholstery these will be a stellar pair of antique Victorian chairs. We regret not being able to have them reupholstered before offering them for sale but our long time upholsterer has retired due to health issues. Our loss is your gain, as if we were able to have them done over prior to listing them for same we’d have them offered at double our current asking price. In their current state they allow the opportunity to make them exactly as you wish and choose a fabric that will complement your current design scheme. The chairs measure 19 1/2” wide x 23” deep x 31” tall with a 17” seat height.
