We take the utmost honor in offering you this fantastic pair of very early 19th Century cast iron George Washington andirons. This pair has a great completely untouched original black paint surface. The image of Washington is that from a famed Gilbert Stuart portrait painting of Washington leaning with his hat held in his hand down by his hip. We note a charming old casting flaw on the specimen depicted on the right side corner base of the first picture image provided here. Each andiron is 21" 1/2" tall, 9" wide at its footed base and has 20 1/2" deep firedogs. These are made in two pieces with the bodies in one solid cast form and the firedogs are fastened by a channel slot on the back of the andirons. The firedogs are very tightly affixed and we will not attempt to break them free using force so they will be shipped, delivered, etc in one piece. We encounter a few pairs of these each year and for the amount of ground we collectively cover that means, to us, they are fairly rare and not commonly available. The ones we do find come from America's very best estates.
