With our highest compliments and honors we're proud to offer for sale this exceptional 20th century rendition of John Frederick Herring's Pharoah's Horses oil on canvas. Herring was born in 1795 in London and is most famous for his work painting horses and other animals throughout England. Earlier in his career he painted race winners and portraits for local taverns. His work was so well received he soon received a commission from many nobles including le Duc d'Orleans & the Duchess of Kent. Once he was recognized by these prominent families a commission from Queen Victoria shortly followed.
There is so much great history and intrigue behind this painting we'd strongly encourage reading up on it. Herring's painting was first shown in 1848 under the name "Pharaoh's Chariot Horses". The original Herring was sold in 1986 at Christies in London for ~$450k. The painting depicts three head studies of famous Grey Arabian stallion, Imaum. Imaum the impressive Arabian belonged to Queen Victoria. Through a series of transfers the horse was eventually sold to Herring. Herring used Imaum as a model in many other paintings. Imaum is the only horse present in the painting with exceptional attention to detail with great execution. There's excellent use of shading and strong knowledge of equine anatomy. There is a dark cloudy sky in the background amid calm waters. This painting is in a very pretty 19th century frame with rare sand casting or sand painting decoration. This same sand casting decoration is the same technique used to give a stone looking facade on Mount Vernon. The frame has wonderful carved gesso work with many concentric borders featuring floral and high luster gilt designs. The gilt on the frame has held up wonderfully and retains a very nice reflective property. The frame has a paper label from J.P Spaulding of Rutland, VT. We just did a quick search and he was a stationary & art supply dealer in Rutland ~1860. Herring's original after being exhibited in 1848 did not surface again until the 1980's. The scene of Pharaoh's horses did circulate through 19th & 20th century through a printed lithograph done by a friend of Herring. For years the three head study of the horse was cherished and loved and took the art world by storm when everybody learned there was an original oil being brought to market that inspired the timeless design. There are certain distinctions between the lithograph run and the original painting. Our best guess would be this was done by someone who was familiar or may have seen the original being exhibited. This painting is 36" wide x 36" tall with a sight size of 24" wide x 23 1/2" tall.
