EXCELLENT MID 19TH CENTURY LARGE OIL ON BOARD LANDSCAPE OF CANADIAN WATERFALL & MOUNTAIN SCENE SIGNED "HITCHCOCK" (ORRA WHITE HITCHCOCK 1796-1851 AMERICAN)
With our compliments we are pleased to offer you this very well done large oil on board Canadian landscape. The scene depicts a waterfall, snow covered mountains, a lake with Canoe and cabin captured from the perspective of a Valley. The most likely match to this signature, its age, subject matter and known works, are that of Massachusetts artist Orra White Hitchcock 1796-1851. This is clearly only our opinion and in this case speculative. Research data is available for you to make your own determination. Aside from what it possibly is: This large landscape appears to be a Canadian landscape coming to us from a Vermont estate of a notes collector. This person came from a very old Vermont family where this painting had descended. It is 50 1/2" long and 26 1/2" wide. It is in original frame that has a sight size of 47 1/2" X 23 1/2".
