Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this stunning vintage neoclassical style mirror. Measuring an impressive 38” wide by 49 1/2” tall, its sheer scale is hard to capture in photos. This massive piece is sure to make a statement in any home and would be perfect in a grand entryway or above a mantel. Large mirrors of this quality and style are rare, offering a fantastic design opportunity for both homeowners and decorators.

The mirror glass has a beveled edge encased in a gold egg-and-dart molding, which transitions seamlessly into a concave silver edge accented by gold spherules. The frame's periphery is adorned with reeded decoration and gilt wreaths at the top. The most striking decorative elements of the mirror are the two full-bodied silver dolphins that surmount the frame. These are Empire-style dolphins which were popular during the early 19th century in both European and American decorative arts. Dolphins, often associated with grace, beauty, and the sea, were especially favored during the American Empire period (circa 1800-1830), when classical imagery became synonymous with opulence and grandeur. The Empire style, influenced by the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in France, embraced bold, classical forms, often drawing inspiration from Greek and Roman antiquities. The dolphin, with its fluid form and dynamic movement, became an emblem of the period’s fascination with nature and the symbolic power of ancient motifs.

While not technically a Girandole mirror because of the lack of candle arms we have it advertised as such because the name has become synonymous with this form. These mirrors were more than just functional objects; they were symbols of wealth and refined taste. Their presence in prominent spaces such as parlors, entryways, and dining rooms reinforced the grandeur of a home, much as this magnificent piece would today. This exquisite mirror represents not only the elegance of the neoclassical style but also the enduring legacy of early 19th-century design. It would make a stunning addition to any collection, offering both beauty and historical significance.
