With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering an impressive and rare early American bed with some of the finest turned posts that we have ever handled. This bed is one of the most spectacular beds that we have ever been able to offer and perhaps the finest example in this design available anywhere. Each of the four massive bed posts were expertly turned and styled by a master wood turner and remain among the most unusual design patterns that we have encountered to date. The turning pattern consists of varying ringlet and baluster vase forms which alter in size throughout the length of the post ending with wonderfully formed acorn tops. This design first took hold in early America in the second half of the 18th century and carried well into the early 19th century as the American Federal movement evolved into the classical period. We believe that this bed was constructed for a wealthy patron somewhere in upper New England where the most robust old growth cherry trees were available for furniture makers to labor into masterfully designed creations. The entire bed is built from the finest grade of figured cherry hardwood and the headboard brilliantly displays the full range of quilted cherry grain with rich and robust character. The headboard has a scrolled pattern which variates the iconic Sheraton design that reached its peak in popularity during the American Federal period. This design is a unique and remarkable pattern which emphasizes bold curvature and makes for the perfect style to accentuate the highly figured cherry grain prominently featured on the headboard. Overall the bed has a beautiful cherry color with a warm patina which absolutely illuminates in the center of a traditional sunlit room. The bed is incredibly sturdy and has been well maintained throughout over two centuries of continued care.

As with all antique beds some coordination is required to have a custom tailored box spring and mattress made for this bed. We have assisted hundreds of clients with this process by providing accurate measurements to a professional service which fabricates bedding for customers with unconventional sized beds. We have found most regions have at least one premier service and it is no issue for us to communicate with a regional bedding maker on our clients behalf. As with all bedding quality varies so we still recommend an in person consultation with a preferred mattress maker to get the best quality and value. For those unfamiliar, a tailor made mattress from a local bedding resource can often by significantly cheaper than an off the rack department store box spring and mattress since smaller companies have a fraction of the overhead compared to the major bedding retailers. The interior of the bed measures 50" wide x 76 1/4" deep. The overall dimensions of the bed are 56 1/4" wide x 84 1/2" deep x 78 1/2" tall.
