IMPORTANT ANTIQUE LATE 18TH CENTURY MASSACHUSETTS SHERATON MAHOGANY GAME TABLE WITH ROPE LEGS AND BEST GRAIN
Here at Bay Colony Antiques we strive to bring you the best, fresh to market antiques, in the comfort of your own home. We traverse this beautiful country in seek of important antiques, art, and objects of importance and interest.
This game table is truly an exceptional find we are delighted to offer to you, our customers. Massachusetts furniture has always been very dear to our hearts, it's where we grew up. This important late 18th century sheraton game table is crafted in the best cuban mahogany one could find at the time. Cuban and Santo Domingan mahogany is no longer available for sale anywhere in the world. We're left with simpler tight grain woods many new age furniture stores sell as "Mahogany" but there's a BIG difference. Exotic woods that had to be imported were very expensive and increased in price as you move away from large port cities and trade centers. There's a very strong rare fiddleback grain running throughout the top of this example.
The incised table top and box show a very sophisticated piece executed with masterful attention to detail. The box transitions from concave to convex panels seperated with vertical reeded swags along the skirt. The traveling gate leg moves steady and true and the brass H hinges are tight, original, and correct. The rope legs are crisp and balanced visibly done by an exceptionally skilled hand. The table is 38" wide x 18" deep x 30" tall. When the table is fully open and extended the depth goes from 18" to 36".
