Bay Colony Antiques is honored to offer you this very significant and ultra rare 2 piece 18th century George III period Dutch West Indies old growth mahogany chest on chest highboy. We see every thing worth seeing moving from New England to the Southern US & Back out to the Ohio River Valley. These are very seldom encountered and even much rarer in this particular format. This handsome chests interior possesses a teak frame that clearly identifies its origin to the Ducth West Indies which was England's major trading outpost for the new world. It speaks to the educated important period furniture collector that it is not the typical English 18th century case piece. While we certainly do not look down upon good 18th century Georgian mahogany chest on chests they have a market cap. We are bringing this onto the market priced correctly in what a fine English chest should be. This chest is a concurrently rare Six over One drawer formatted configuration. Boldly defined with wonderful presence grace & simply the best dental carved crown with cock beaded graduated drawers carved quarter columns, original brasses with locks & working key. Rare in itself speaking to how well it was owned. When we received this we immediately sent it to our expert restorer for to re-brace the secondary chamfered back panels to its frame. The work performed was amazing using all proud wooden peg joinery. 250 year old case pieces are subject to pine secondary woods deterioration. It employs almost extinct Yew woods and nicely hand chamfered drawer panels. This highboy is entirely made from old growth Cuban mahogany. The drawer actions are all smooth and correct evidenced in its maintenance and gentle caring with each cases glue blocks still in tact. The case defines the very best in Old world joinery techniques of tight hand cut dovetails & wooden pegged fastening mortised & tenoned without an iron nail used.
