With our highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in presenting this spectacular early American tiger maple butler's desk. The desk is a remarkable example of the emerging country federal style of the late 18th century when the popularity of traditional high style American federal furniture spread through the countryside replacing the primitive Queen Anne forms which predated this era. The desk is constructed with solid figured tiger maple hardwoods and veneer which has remained in near original condition developing a brilliant patina surface which shows the oxidization of two centuries of continued household use. Below the drop-down writing surface which reveals a full interior of compartmented pigeonholes and drawers are three graduated drawers each fitted with turned knobs and an inset escutcheon. The butler's desk is raised on four finely turned legs which have been fitted with removable caster wheels. We believe the desk to have originated somewhere in New York or Pennsylvania anywhere near the expansive border that spans between both states. Quite often when we are furnishing traditional American country homes we prefer case furniture built with brilliant American native hardwoods, original as found condition with plenty of oxidization and indications of age, and an understated antique design that does not overwhelm the space it occupies. Anyone in the process of furnishing an antique American home with a quality traditional interior should consider an early butler's desk as part of their collection as they provide quite a bit of functional everyday use while still maintaining a timeless look. The desk measures 41 3/4" wide x 19" deep x 45" tall.
