ANTIQUE 20TH CENTURY FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE BUREAU PLAT EXECUTIVE DESK W/ THE BEST ORMOULU MOUNTS & LEATHER TOP
Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.
We're delighted to offer for sale this exceptional 20th century antique Louis XV style leather top bureau plat desk. French directorie furniture is highly coveted among collectors across the globe and in high demand. With exceptional use of grain, proportions, and the best figural ormolu mounts this is a stunning piece of furniture. French furniture is copied still today and cheap reproductions flood the market. This is a very well made desk. Needless to say these were not made in the US. Desks such as this were imported from Europe in the early - mid 20th century. We didn't see a brand or mark on this desk but based on the quality we're thinking French or Italian origin.
The desk has three shaped front drawers adorned with floral pulls and cross banded burl panels. The leather top is in good condition with only a very minimal lifting at some edges. The leather top is shaped to match the top and decorated with gold tooling. A wonderful egg and dart ormolu liner envelops the entire top with 4 heavy brass floral corner caps. The cabriolet legs are nice and tight without the major veneer issues that plague these types of desks. Each leg is decorated with monumental full bodied figural caryatid women with floral dress.
