EARLY 19TH CENTURY FRENCH EMPIRE / CLASSICAL CHEVAL MIRROR CARVED AND SHAPED BASE - BEST FORM
Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.
We proudly present for sale this early 19th century mahogany cheval dressing mirror in the high classical / french empire manner. The mirror stands atop 4 carved rolled french feet with water leaf carvings directly above. There's a very attractive turtle shaped base with a thick heavy gauge mahogany molded edge. This mirror is made of highly coveted Santo Domingan Mahogany. This older species was farmed to near extinction with only tiny quantities surviving under well deserved protectionist measures. The relativity to the equator and mineral deposits in the area gave the imported island timber a rich oil content resulting in a lustrous glow not found in modern day woods sold as "mahogany". The vertical stiles supporting the mirror are also carved and transition cleanly to their rolled ends. The mounting mechanism is cleanly mounted within the harps which is nice if you don't like the bolts that usually attach cheval mirrors. This mirror retains it's original old glass with the most minimal signs of age appropriate wear. Please note this design was continued well into the Victorian era it's one of the most desirable French Empire forms. An astute eye can clearly see the superior more complex earlier examples such as this one. When you have both side by side the difference is unquestionable. This mirror is 32" wide x 19 3/4" deep x 63 1/4" tall. The glass measures 23" x 47".
