EARLY 19TH CENTURY CLASSICAL MAHOGANY AND BIRDS EYE MAPLE LIFT TOP WORK TABLE WITH LION FOOT CARVED BASE - NYC - DUNCAN PHYFE SCHOOL

Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We strive to bring you the best, fresh to market antiques offered below market value in the comfort of your own home. We are pleased to offer for sale this wonderful early 19th century mahogany & birds eye maple lift top stand on an acanthus carved and animorphic base.

The stand is finished on all 4 sides retaining it's old correct finish. The 4 corners are decorated with beautiful birds eye maple panels finished in a warm amber color. The bookmatched mahogany top lifts to reveal a fully fitted interior concealed behind the unassuming faux drawer face. The two hand dovetailed lower drawers actuate with ease with a pleasing rounded design profile. The base contains a large central classical column with 4 very finely carved lion paw feet with acanthus leaf accents and gadrooned edge.

We have this table dated right around 1810/1815. We believe this was made in a proficient cabinet shop in or around New York City. We note a lot of similarities in the design to work characteristic of cabinet maker Duncan Phyfe and entertain this could be of his school. The estate we purchased this from was furnished with similar Phyfe tables, we can confidently stand by our attribution. We note a small stable shrinkage line along the left edge and a very minuscule lifting on the front faux drawer. There's a very old repair where one toe nail was knocked off and glued back on very cleanly. We missed it the first time around. We note every condition matter we observe no matter how negligible they may be.  This is a 200+ year old exotic wood in a foreign climate showing the most minimal of age appropriate wear. The stand is 20 1/4" wide x 16 3/4" deep x 30 1/2" tall. When the lift top is opened at it's highest position the height is 46 3/4" tall.
