Antique Victorian Sewing Cabinet / Small File Cabinet - Legal & Letter Size
Bay colony antiques is pleased to offer for sale this wonderful late 19th century antique Victorian Mahogany & Oak sewing cabinet / file cabinet. This is such a great size, and we think it would also make a nice silverware chest or jewelry box if you laid down some felt in the open cavity and the drawers. The cabinet has paneled sides and a large storage cavity underneath the lift top. Although we can only speculate on its original use, it’s a wonderful utilitarian 2 drawer cabinet that we could see a number of our clients having a good use for.
The top drawer has a partition that segments the drawer about a quarter of the way through. The larger section in the top drawer has useable dimensions of 12 3/8” wide x 8 5/8” deep, the smaller section measures 3 7/8” wide x 8 5/8” deep. The larger section can house standard letter paper which is 8.5” x 11”. The bottom drawer is open and can be used at full width. The bottom drawer has useable dimensions of 16 1/2” wide x 8 1/2” deep x 2” tall. Which can house legal sized papers which are 8.5” x 14”. The drawers are fitted with their original brass thumb pulls and the escutcheon and chain were a later addition. Like many other lift top cabinets & chests, the cabinet has an old repair where the hinges ripped out at one point in the box's life. The top isn’t weak or wobbly at all and the previous owner added the little chain to ensure the top couldn’t overextend again. The overall dimensions of the cabinet are 20 1/2” wide x 11 1/2” deep x 11 1/2” tall. When the top is fully open the height is 21 1/2”.
