We’re pleased to offer for sale this charming late 19th century / early 20th century antique Victorian oak medicine cabinet. Medicine cabinets became popular in American homes during the late 19th century with the emergence of dedicated bathrooms as more homes were fitted with indoor plumbing, and an increased interest in home hygiene. The cabinet has a mirrored door with a beveled edge and an acanthus leaf carving at the top. Below the door there’s a single drawer with a bead molding along the bottom edge. On the underside of the drawer panel there is some old pencil script notating what is likely to be a previous owner of the cabinet. The inscription appears to read “Luther? Jacobs Richford Vermont Sept 20 1922.” Richford is a small town along the US & Canada border which at the time was a pretty busy border crossing & trade town due to their railroad infrastructure. The town had a decent history of furniture manufacturing due to their abundance of local lumber and established sawmills on the Missisquoi River. Richford experienced a devastating flood that ravaged the town in 1927 but was rebuilt shortly after. The cabinet measures 14” wide x 7” deep x 22” tall.
