When grading antique file cabinets we like to first look at the form. We sell a decent amount of standard vertical file cabinets every year and are always in the market for atypical formats like this example. These shorter companion files are much harder to come by and we love the added utility of the pull-out work surface that is concealed underneath the top. Second we like to look at construction. Examples with paneled sides are superior to ones with straight sides as the panels can expand and contract ever so slightly within the frame system to adapt to seasonal changes in temperature and humidity and are resistant to splitting. The cabinet has double recessed panels on the sides and back. The four drawers actuate with ease and have moulded faces. The cabinets original integrity and condition are also important. The cabinet retains its original surface which has remained in remarkably good condition over 100+ years with only minor surface wear. The cabinet measures 24” wide x 20” deep x 31 1/2” tall overall. The drawers have usable dimensions of 18” wide x 13 3/4” deep x 4 1/2” tall.
