With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this terrific antique side chair. We have come to own many variations of side chairs from the New England countryside throughout all the years in which we have been collecting antiques, and we only offer premium examples for sale through our online catalogues. This particular chair is as fine as any we could possibly source having been left undisturbed and remaining in excellent condition throughout over two centuries of household use.
The painted surface of the chair is quite desirable as far as collectors of rare antiques are concerned. The black paint is centuries old and possibly the original first surface applied to the chair frame. The surface has weathered as to be expected, and in that process has developed wonderful characteristics that only true antique paint finishes can possess. The frame of the chair is strong and in good order however we advise that this chair is treated as more of an accent piece than something that gets used on a daily basis. Afterall, this chair is worthy of being housed in a small museum where primitive furniture from the Queen Anne period would be showcased. The back of the chair is configured with four vertical ladderback supports that are slightly contoured. The presence of two turned knob style finials atop each upright makes this chair considerably more desirable from a collector's standpoint. The seat is splint woven and has remained in fine condition with respect to its age and delicate nature. The base of the chair consists of two front legs which feature wonderful primitive turnings and a series of stretchers that bolster the strength of the entire piece. The chair measures 20 3/4” wide x 13” deep x 41” tall with a 16” seat height.
