With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exceptional antique dressing table. Originally the lower section of an 18th-century Queen Anne highboy, this piece was thoughtfully repurposed by an expert restorer with the addition of a newer tiger maple top that beautifully complements its centuries-old case. Antique dressing tables are among the rarest and most sought-after forms of traditional furniture, and we are proud to present this wonderful example to our collectors across the country.
The entire case of this dressing table is comprised of boldly figured tiger maple lumber. The sophisticated form of the case is indicative of a New England lowboy design, particularly from the coastal regions of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. The cabinetmaker who first designed this case centuries ago styled the piece with dramatic scallop scrollwork patterns along the lower apron across the front and on both sides. This piece is expertly constructed with dovetailed rails and pegged joinery throughout resulting in a tremendously strong and reliable case. The dressing table stands on four graceful cabriole legs which end with fabulously formed Queen Anne spoon feet. Its drawer arrangement consists of a single long drawer above three smaller drawers, each of which are fitted with their original brass hardware and were constructed with molded edges and hand-cut dovetails. While there are minor repairs to the drawer fronts and slight wood loss on the 18th-century backboard, these do not detract from its overall beauty and historical significance. The lowboy measures 40 1/4” wide x 20 1/2” deep x 36” tall.
