PAIR OF ANTIQUE NEW ENGLAND SHERATON STYLE CHERRY TWIN BEDS WITH PINEAPPLE CARVED POSTS
With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this remarkable pair of antique twin size beds. These beds have been meticulously cared for and remain in outstanding condition, superior in every respect to anything produced by modern manufacturers. Over the decades, we’ve had the privilege of offering nearly identical beds and continue to actively seek out these traditional forms due to their enduring quality and historical charm. They are especially well-suited for historic homes or guest rooms that call for reliable, period-appropriate furnishings.
Though unsigned, we recognize this form well, having encountered similar examples in some of the wealthiest estates along Massachusetts' historic North Shore. Notable firms such as Sacks Furniture and designers like Wallace Nutting commissioned high-quality, early American-style beds for affluent clients throughout New England. A distinctive feature of this pair is the "star-punched" carving at the tops of each bedpost, an element attributed to the workshop of famed Salem cabinetmaker Samuel McIntire, whose influence spanned generations.
Designed in the Sheraton style and inspired by American Federal-era beds of the late 18th century, these frames are constructed from solid cherry and showcase finely turned posts and intricate carved details. The footboards feature stylized pineapple finials executed with a level of precision only a master carver could achieve. The headboards have a double raised panel design with rolled crests & curved ears. We love the lighter Cherry sapwood that is showcased at the top of the crests. Each bed stands on elegantly turned legs and assembles securely with steel bed bolts, which are accessed discreetly behind decorative covers. These bolts ensure long-lasting strength and stability, making these beds suitable for generations of continued use. From top to bottom, this pair exemplifies the finest in traditional American design and craftsmanship. The beds measure 42” wide x 82 1/2” deep x 57” tall.
