This example is among the choicest offerings we have been able to secure in quite some time. Towards the end of the 18th century most homes in New England had a work table in either a living room or bedroom where garments, linens, and other items would be sewn and repaired throughout the day. Every interior required at least one table for this purpose and as it was something where considerable amounts of time would be spent demand for higher quality examples led to craftsmen producing more refined versions of these tables every year. We proudly now offer this table as one of the cleanest and well preserved examples available anywhere.
This table is in excellent condition with a beautiful finish that brings out the full depth of color within the rich mahogany grain. With exposure to even a moderate amount of daylight the entire piece illuminates with a desirable warmth and brilliance. In particular the mahogany used to construct the top of this table has remarkable figuring and boldly patterned grain. The two drawers are each fitted with floral embossed knob pulls and inset brass escutcheons. The drawers also feature hand cut dovetailed construction and primitive secondary drawer panels which have oxidized thoroughly over the course of two centuries. This table is styled in the Sheraton manner with four turned vertical legs that are mirrored by smaller turned feet. A lower support shelf tier is also present which is an uncommon feature that is desired by antique collectors. The table is made to easily move with four brass caster wheels that are affixed to each of the turned feet. We note several old repairs to the drawer faces which were expertly restored. The worktable measures 20” wide x 16” deep x 30 1/4” tall.
