With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this exceptional antique Mahogany card table. This exquisite piece is a product of the famous cabinetmaker Nathan Margolis who operated a furniture making studio in Hartford, Connecticut a century ago. The Margolis Workshop produced furniture in the Federal style for prominent families around lower New England that wanted the finest furniture available made to the highest standards possible of that era. The Margolis workshop remained active for decades and it has been our great fortune to have owned and sold numerous wonderful examples of his incredible line of traditional early American furniture.
Margolis furniture is celebrated for its historical accuracy, exceptional craftsmanship, and superior materials-all of which are exemplified in this table. The card table showcases a sophisticated bowfront form with serpentine ends that work together in creating an elaborate shape consisting of these compound curves. The Mahogany selected for the top & corresponding leaf are absolutely superb and there is a variegated geometric inlay around each edge. When opened the grain flows seamlessly across both halves, creating a striking visual effect and enhancing the overall congruity of the design. The apron features crotched mahogany panels with a large oval inlay at the center comprised of figured satinwood that was selected to brilliantly contrast the darker mahogany wood color. There are also rectangular satinwood inlaid panels above each leg contained inside of a string border. A fantastic geometric patterned inlay with triangular elements spans the perimeter of the table & each of the five tapered legs have a string inlay and inlaid cuffs. The fifth rear leg is also inlaid and is designed to swing open ninety degrees to support the top leaf of the card table when it is opened. The table was branded under the top and underneath the apron by Margolis and retains its original paper label. The table is in very good condition with our only notes being minor surface wear & a few light discolorations on the inside of the top. When folded up the table measures 36” wide x 17 1/4” deep x 29 1/2” tall. When the table is open in the gaming position the tabletop measures 36” wide x 34 1/2” deep.
