Bay Colony Antiques is pleased to offer for sale this charming early 19th century antique Mahogany & Rosewood Worktable / Nightstand. The stand has two drawers, with the top drawer being compartmentalized to house different sewing tools & materials the lady of the house would be using. The Rosewood top is veneered and was a later addition to jazz up the table a bit more. The table rests on four turned legs with cross hatched carvings & demure incised carvings on the diamonds. The stylization of the carvings on the legs and the form of the feet bottoms bears a striking resemblance to a John Holbrook table we currently have for sale. Holbrook’s shop was about a quarter mile from our Springfield warehouse where the MassMutual civic center is today. Not much is known about JF Holbrook as even our best Connecticut River Valley Cabinet makers are severely underrepresented outside of Pelatiah Bliss, William Lloyd, Eliphalet Chapin, etc. The table is in very good condition with our only further notes being minor surface wear & a couple of minuscule veneer chips on the edge of the top. We’ll have our restorer properly address the veneer chips so they’re not at risk of being snagged on a piece of clothing as somebody walks by and further expanding. The worktable measures 20 7/8” wide x 17” deep x 27 3/4” tall.
