With our highest compliments and utmost honors, Bay Colony Antiques is pleased to offer this exceptional late 19th to early 20th century mahogany recamier. We make every effort to acquire quality examples of this form, and we were especially excited when we found this one. Recamiers of this caliber and style are quite rare, presenting a fantastic design opportunity for both homeowners and decorators. Measuring 77 1/2” wide, this piece would be ideal at the foot of a king-size bed or positioned in front of a large bay window. While we could not locate a maker’s mark, its craftsmanship strongly suggests a top-tier cabinet shop—possibly Flint & Horner, Berkey & Gay, or another leading maker of the period.
The sofa features rolled arms with finely carved swan necks, a neoclassical motif most closely associated with French Empire furniture, symbolizing elegance and grace. The mahogany seat rail is accented with carved rosettes at the corners and rests on robust lion paw feet with feather-carved details. The white damask upholstery is in excellent condition, which we would grade as a 9 out of 10. The only minor imperfections are a small dark discoloration on the lower right side (visible in photo 10) and light marks on the round cushions. The upholstery remains entirely serviceable in its present state, and we shrink-wrapped the piece immediately after photographing to preserve its remarkable condition. There’s a tiny bit of veneer shrinkage on the back seat rail which we’ll have our restorer touch up despite it being hardly noticeable and totally a non issue. The overall dimensions of the bench are 76 1/2” wide x 28 1/2” deep x 32 1/2” tall. The seat measures 65” wide at the narrowest point between the arms x 27 1/2” deep with an 18” seat height.
