Bay colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this wonderful early 20th century antique Globe Wernicke 13 drawer file cabinet. This is a Mahogany example which were made in fewer numbers than the Oak ones because Mahogany was more expensive at the time. The Globe File Company was founded in the 1880’s and merged with the Wernicke company to become Globe Wernicke around the turn of the 20th century. The cabinet is signed at the top center with a Globe Wernicke decal.
The 11 standard drawers have open backs and retain their original spring tension bars. All but one of the drawers have the original paper Globe Wernicke ledgers pasted on them. These were designed to be used in conjunction with either accounting notebooks or file folders, so they were easy to open and flip through because of the open backs. Oftentimes we encounter these with the tension bars removed and makeshift backs added but we always prefer to find them unaltered. Remnants of old white glue at the drawer backs leads us to believe at some point a previous owner glued on makeshift backs, but they have since been removed. The cabinet also has two smaller card catalog drawers both with their interior tension plates and the left drawer retains its original early 1900’s lettered paper folders. The cabinet presents well and is in very good condition with our only additional notes being some light degradation to the finish and a discoloration on the top. You may notice a dark diagonal streak on our photos of the sides & back. This is just a shadow from a tree across from our warehouse, not a dark mark on the cabinet. The cabinet measures 27 1/2” wide x 13 1/2” deep x 32” tall.
