Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic 19th century antique figured Cherry drop leaf dining table. The tabletop showcases an attractive curly or fiddleback grain which is quite uncommon and is only present in a small amount of Cherry trees as most Cherry lumber possesses relatively straight grain.
The table has a single drawer with a rounded face and is fitted with a brass ring pull. The drawer was constructed with pine secondaries and was joined with hand cut dovetails and has a hand chamfered panel that is nailed in at the back. One small detail to look for when examining antique furniture and trying to determine its authenticity can be seen where the nail heads are on the bottom of the drawer. The dark marks near the nail heads were caused over time by a chemical reaction from the iron oxide in the nails reacting with the tannins in the wood. The leaves are supported by pull out shuttles built into the table box and one of the hinges has an old English hallmark stamped into it reading “JS&S” with a crown.
Overall, the table is in very good condition with our only notes being minor surface wear. When the leaves are down the table measures 20 5/8” wide x 39 3/8” deep x 29 3/8” tall. The tabletop alone measures 19” wide x 39 3/8” deep. When the leaves are locked up the tabletop measures 48 3/4” wide.
