Antique Federal Period Tiger Maple & Cherry Spool Turned Tall Chest / Dresser
With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this remarkable antique tall chest. We could not be any prouder to put this dresser forward for the consideration of collectors across the country as it is one of the best antique chests of drawers available anywhere. Our practice has a high threshold with respect to the quality of antique dressers which we choose to acquire and bring to market as we do not offer anything which we would not be happy to permanently own ourselves. This dresser features striking tiger maple drawers which are boldly figured and fitted with exceptional antique glass knobs as well as diamond inlaid escutcheons. The glass knobs were likely made by The Boston & Sandwich Glass Company as they are superior in design and quality to nearly all other antique glass knobs. The case of the tall chest is primarily cherry with poplar utilized for the top. When the drawers are removed the case is quite light and easy to manage should that be a consideration. There are twin half columns on either side of the drawers which feature wonderful spool turnings situated over turned feet. Along the base section of the chest beneath the lowest drawer is a continual line of spool turned design work which is tighter and more intricate that the turnings on the half columns. We believe that this chest of drawers is of Virginia origins, dating to either the late 18th or early 19th century, however would consider another state for the place of origination. Each drawer features a thin incised line bordering the drawer face as well as inset locks and handcut dovetail construction. The backboards and all other secondary woods display excellent signs of oxidation which only centuries of passing time can create. This antique tall chest measures 41 1/2" wide x 19 1/2" deep x 45" tall overall.
