With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this wonderful antique candlestand. Along with antique chairs and side tables, we believe antique candlestands to be among the most versatile and practical household items when putting together a historic interior. They take up very little room as far as interior space is concerned and work well in nearly every room of the home including common ways and the corners of rooms which can be notoriously difficult to decorate. Along with the versatility these tables offer they also complement existing antique furniture collections well which is important to consider as collectors want all of their antiques to work well together so that the household feels lived in and not a repository for expensive objects.
This candlestand is an outstanding example of historic late 18th century craftsmanship with the entire piece being comprised of a fine grade of exotic mahogany. The surface of the top in particular features bold and desirable mahogany grain with a warmth and depth that develops throughout centuries of undisturbed growth and oxidation. The rectangular top has rounded corners and is allowed to flip upward and fold downward by two cleats that secure the top to the pedestal and an antique brass "crab" or "turtle" lock that secures the top when the surface is being used to support a candlestick or small tea service. A craftsman with a talent for turning wood fashioned the pedestal with elements of Grecian urns and balusters separated by turned ringlet transitions. The most desirable feature of this exceptional candlestand are the three shaped legs which support the piece overall. All three legs are shaped in the form of cornucopias which is a design element popular during the Federal period and mostly associated with antique furniture made in New York in areas such as the Hudson River Valley. When the tabletop is locked down the table measures 20 1/4” wide x 18 3/4” deep x 28 1/4” tall. When the top is flipped up like in our first image the table measures 22” wide x 17” deep x 40 3/8” tall.
