Antique Federal Period Kentucky Cherry Three Drawer Bachelor's Chest - Rare Form
Antique Federal Period Kentucky Cherry Three Drawer Bachelor's Chest - Rare Form
With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this wonderful antique chest of drawers. We are delighted to boast this example as one of our most recent acquisitions as it is both incredibly rare and immensely desirable among collectors of antique southern furniture. It is our belief that this chest belonged to a family living in eastern Kentucky around the beginning of the 19th century, at the height of the American Federal period. In all our years of collecting and dealing fine antiques we have found that Kentucky period furniture made of cherry has a unique depth of character and color, qualities which do not seem to be present in any of the other historic regions in this country. The form of this chest is exceedingly rare with a three drawer format generally regarded as a low chest or a bachelor chest. We have found demand for this particular form to have remained strong where other traditional designs have fallen out of favor. The lower stature of the chest often lends itself to finding prominent placement in a historic interior particularly where the space allows for a large mirror or fine painting.
The chest features a solid cherry case with frame and panel construction and drawers with hand cut dovetailed joinery. The drawer panels and back of the chest have oxidized beautifully through two centuries and exhibit qualities which only the passing of time can create. Each drawer is fitted with two brilliant brass knob pulls along with original iron locks visible from the interior. At one time the chest had different pulls which were replaced with the current brass knobs and the original mounting holes were properly filled. The chest stands on four turned legs in the Sheraton manner ending on finely formed ball feet. The antique bachelor's chest measures 45 3/4" wide x 21 1/2" deep x 34 1/4" tall.
