Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic early 19th century antique Federal Period corner washstand. Washstands once played an important role in an early American home but began being phased out during the Victorian era when more homes were fitted with indoor plumbing. This particular washstand is crafted from a combination of figured Cherry and bold Bird’s Eye Maple, both native New England timbers known for their distinctive beauty. The piece features an elegantly scrolled gallery with a small upper shelf at the back corner. A pitcher of fresh water would be kept on the lower shelf with a wash basin in the large cut out. The contrast of the darker Cherry & the light Bird’s Eye Maple creates a striking visual appearance. The lower shelf is fitted with a single drawer with a brass pull with an embossed floral design. We love the exposed dovetail joinery that can be seen in our images of the sides. The stand measures 27 1/4” wide x 19” deep x 41” tall at the back of the gallery and 30” tall at the top surface with the circular cutout.
