With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this remarkable antique chest of drawers. We were fortunate to have acquired this exceptional chest from the estate of a Southern gentleman who had recently decided to start selling the larger pieces in his antique collection. The majority of his collection was acquired by going to antique shows in the 1970's and 1980's with his wife who also loved traveling to various states and bringing home choice finds from their adventures. The larger form of this chest is designed for practical reasons to suit the needs of a gentleman with a considerable amount of clothing. This chest features two convex valuable drawers above an arrangement of four larger full length drawers. The small upper drawers would have been used for holding accessories and small personal items while the primary drawers would house clothing and blankets. The majority of chests made in this era do not have smaller drawers as it was customary to keep items in a dresser box which would be places atop the dresser. The inclusion of both of these drawers is a feature which most collectors would desire to have.
The entire chest is comprised of a beautiful selection of cherry and tiger maple lumber. The boldest and most brilliant grade of tiger maple was selected for each drawer face creating a wonderful and vibrant contrast against the solid cherry case. The top of the chest has a large backsplash with a molded accent spanning across the top edge. The entire case is built with frame and panel construction allowing for the wooden panels to expand and contract seasonally as all wood does with changes to humidity. This superior design prevents age related splits and warping from occurring and thus ensuring the longevity of the chest of drawers. Each drawer features a masterful arrangement of hand cut dovetails and several drawers are fitted with brass escutcheons and original iron locks. The drawers rest between solid tiger maple half pilasters and the chest stands on two turned rounded feet. The backboards are original to the case and have oxidized wonderfully over two centuries. The chest measures 48" wide x 21" deep (21 3/4" with knob) x 55 3/4" tall at the top of the gallery.
