ANTIQUE NEW YORK CA 1820 FEDERAL MAHOGANY DUNCAN PHYFE
CARD TABLE / GAME TABLE

Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this wonderful early 19th century antique Federal period Mahogany card table / game table. We purchased this from a local Hartford County home alongside a couple paintings & a few other pieces of furniture. We believe the table was made in New York City, but in all fairness, we have also handled very similar examples from Boston & Salem Massachusetts. A nearly identical table can be seen in Historic New England’s collection under item no GUSN-174458 which is available to view on their website. That table has an old paper label on the bottom declaring it a Duncan Phyfe table but as many people will know his name has become synonymous with this style of furniture. There’s a bit of information about the provenance on the label as well but unfortunately the benefactor has ties to both Boston & NYC which doesn’t help sway us in either direction. This belonged to the seller's late grandmother who owned the table for as long as he could remember. The rest of her collection was primarily New York furniture which sways us a little more towards it having a New York City origin.

The table showcases a fantastic crotch Mahogany veneer on the top and apron with a cross banded mahogany veneer along the edge of each leaf. The top is hinged and swivels to extend into a decent sized playing surface. These tables were designed for entertainment and would have only been obtainable by a family of means. On top of being constructed with expensive imported Mahogany, the table also required multiple hours of a highly skilled carver's time. The table has an Acanthus leaf carved baluster that was exceptionally well executed that rests atop a gadrooned base. The table has four down swept legs with incised carvings on their upward face. The sides of each leg have relief carved curlicues that swirl into a small point opposed to others that feature concentric circles. Each leg was reinforced to the base with iron straps and the elements of the table are joined together with an iron rod and nut that can be seen on our photo showing the underside of the table. Each leg retains their original brass casters which are stamped Birmingham on the sides and have a protruding circle on the outer edge. These casters are extremely uncommon, and we only encounter them very sparingly. Overall, the table is in very fine condition with only a few minor issues. Like many of these, the top leaf has a slight cupping and one of the brass hinges is missing a small portion. The hinge still functions as intended and doesn’t wobble or impede use at all, so we opted to just leave it as is. If you’d like to replace it these card table hinges can be purchased online. There are also a couple of veneer chips on the banding & apron that we’ll have our restorer fill in. The table measures 35 1/8” wide x 17 3/8” deep x 29” tall.
