With our absolute highest compliments Bay Colony Antiques takes the utmost pleasure in offering this wonderful antique side chair. This chair has the distinction of being produced by The Workshop of L & J.G. Stickley, the original successors to Gustav Stickley one of the leading pioneers of the Arts & Crafts movement in America. The mark denoting "The Work of L & J.G. Stickley" is branded upon the inside face of one of the chair stretchers. This partnership resulted in the production of some of the finest works of the Arts & Crafts design movement with the Stickley's ultimately reaching people across the country through their paper catalogues. Quaint Furniture was among the various names the Craftsmen type furniture was manufactured under and today these works command a premium with those seeking the finest works of Arts & Crafts furniture.
The chair frame is constructed entirely of solid oak with quartersawn tiger grain present on most visible surfaces. The crest of the chair is arched and pegged to the upright frame supports. The back of the chair is contoured and has three craftsmen style vertical splats which support whoever sits in the chair. The entirety of the chair frame is constructed with pegged tenons and overall the entire chair is considerably strong and dependable. A wonderful green leather material was selected for the chair seat upholstery, and it is secured with a series of brass tacks. The chair is finished in a beautiful mission brown color that has enriched throughout time resulting in a most desirable patina surface. This chair was likely made to be a desk chair as it is the perfect size for that purpose. The entire piece is in remarkable condition, and we have no doubt an educated Arts & Crafts collector will seize the opportunity to own such an incredible piece of this historic design movement. The chair measures 16" wide x 15 1/2" deep x 37 1/2" tall with a 20 1/2" tall seat height.
