Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic early 20th century antique Arts & Crafts / Mission Oak footstool. We couldn't locate a maker’s mark, but have seen a few near identical examples signed Stickley Bros. The seat box has a nice subtle curve, and the stool is in excellent condition. The last couple of these that we’ve sold have had the fabric stretched over the arched sides. The old upholstery tack holes underneath the rails suggests this was also once completely covered by the fabric, but we don’t understand why you’d want to cover up such beautiful quarter sawn oak grain. Since the rails aren’t covered, we were able to notice that the longer horizontal rails are veneered. That probably explains why most ended up covered because it’s easier to just stretch a little extra fabric over the edges opposed to properly fixing the veneer should it break. This footstool has a small veneer loss on the bottom of the left side of the horizontal rail that can be seen in our second & third pictures. We’re hyper critical when it comes to condition and don’t feel like it’s anything that would need to be addressed, but part of our full disclosure policy is to point out any “flaw” no matter how inconsequential they may be. We purchased this from a seasoned Arts & Crafts collector who recovered the footstool with a tasteful blue velvet. Footstools like this are extremely easy to reupholster, and if you do choose to have it recovered at some point, they look especially good with a leather seat or a needlepoint seat. The footstool measures 16 3/4” wide x 11 3/4” deep x 15” tall.
