Antique Amberg Tiger Oak 4 Drawer Wood File Cabinet
Antique Amberg Tiger Oak 4 Drawer Wood File Cabinet
We're pleased to offer for sale this early 20th century antique Amberg four drawer oak file cabinet. Cameron Amberg & co was established in 1868 in Chicago, IL. The company was a prolific producer of letter files and a wide array of antique office furniture. The file cabinet has bold Tiger Oak grain on the drawers faces with large stripes or rays present. The pulls and index card plates were replaced but the replacements look pretty good. We suspect this was part of a multi section file unit because the sides, back, and top are later fabrications. Whoever performed the work did a great job and absolutely nailed the color and finish. Its Golden Oak color is refreshingly bright, providing a lighter, airy feel that stands out from the often-darker factory finishes typically found on similar oak file cabinets. The drawers have useable dimensions of 12 1/8” wide x 23 1/2” deep x 10 1/2” tall. The 1st, 2nd, and 4th drawers retain their original tensioner plates with the Amberg paper labels attached. These tension plates can still be used in conjunction with standard file folders; however, most opt to use a hanging file system by purchasing adjustable hanging file frames that sit inside the drawers and are readily available online and at big box stores. Overall, the file is in very good condition with our only additional notes being that the file rods were removed, and the top has a slight spring at the back edge. As we’ve mentioned before, it’s not uncommon to see the file rods removed as compatible folders with a ring at the bottom became obsolete shortly after. The file measures 17 1/2” wide x 26 1/2” deep (27 1/2” with pull) x 53 1/2” tall.
