Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic antique 2 tier revolving bookcase. These were made in England during the late 19th / early 20th century and can be found in a number of different woods and with different inlay patterns. This bookcase was made from beautiful English Elm, often referred to as Carpathian Elm. The boldest Elm was reserved for the top with an attractive wavy grain pattern and a plethora of “eyes” or nodules. There’s an ebony sting inlay in the shape of a square with cut out corners on the top. The very center of the top has a satinwood pinwheel or paterae inlay amid an ebony field with a string inlay border to provide additional contrast. We’d like to point out the shading on the satinwood that makes up the pinwheel. This effect is achieved by dipping each individual component in scorching hot sand that lightly burns the edges to give the inlay greater depth. The end product is truly impressive and gives the pinwheel a 3d effect. There are 4 shelves on each section with usable dimensions of 9 1/4” wide x 6” deep x 10 3/4” tall. The overall dimensions of the bookcase are 18 1/4” wide x 18 1/4” deep x 30 1/2” tall.
