Bay Colony Antiques is pleased to offer for sale this charming late 19th century antique oil on canvas landscape painting. The painting features a quaint landscape of a small town with a church tower, cottages, a canal, and vegetation. The subject matter is tonal & calm which was typical of academic or Barbizon influenced paintings during the late 19th century. There is a faint importers mark on the back of the canvas in the shape of an artists palette. The text is faint but we can distinctly make out the words “Prepared By” at the top, then what appears to be F W Devoe & CO, and distinctively “New York & Importers Of Artist Materials”. There is a “10” & a “22” written along the top edge of the back of the frame which denotes the size. Each corner of the back has iron shuttle keys with a patent date of FEB 3 1883 & JUN 10 1885 with the initials A.D.S. The initials belong to Connecticut painter Aaron Draper Shattuck who patented these keys to help hold the stretchers tight to the frame. Devoe was a distributor of these Shattuck keys which makes us believe the canvas mark is from Devoe as well despite it being very faint. Please review the photos closely as there is some minor paint loss, but nothing out of line for an unframed 19th century canvas. The painting is in wonderful condition and measures 22” wide x 10” tall.
