Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this wonderful 20th century Chippendale antique style king size Mahogany Tester bed. A traditional 18th century design, a rice carved plantation bed is a highly sought after American staple. The earliest known examples were made in the Carolinas in the second half of the 18th century. The original gentleman to commission the design wanted the plants that gave him his immense wealth carved into the post. Rice and tobacco were the most prevalent cash crops in the area at the time. The bed is crafted from a high grade of Mahogany and the posts are finely carved with tobacco leaves at the lower turnings & rice carvings above. It’s rare to find king beds with testers and the system that comes with this bed is very high quality. A lot of times you just find flat testers, but these were designed to be showcased and mirror the crown molding of the room. This is the most traditional crown molding profile and because it’s not overly complex it will still fit well with more unique patterns you may have in your home. This came to us with 3 brass curtain rods but we didn't install them for the picture. We left the mounting hardware on the bed and there is one that runs the width of the footboard, one for each long rail, and the headboard never had one because it would be up against the wall. The bed has a center rail to accept a split king foundation with each side accepting a twin xl box spring. The top of the posts can be removed where the reed carvings stop making the bed much easier to handle and move throughout the home. The bed is in wonderful condition with our only notes being minimal surface wear but nothing that would warrant a refinishing. There are a few chips at the feet that we will have our restorer address. The bed measures 83” wide x 90” deep x 89” tall.
