We're delighted to offer for sale this great 20th century queen size Chippendale antique style rice carved plantation tester / canopy bed. A traditional 18th century design, a rice carved bed is a highly sought after American staple. The earliest known examples were made in the Carolinas in the second half of the 18th century. The original gentleman to commission the design wanted the plants that gave him his immense wealth carved into the post. Rice and tobacco we're the most prevalent cash crops in the area at the time. Commonly referred to as simply plantation beds this example stands on block collared feet with decorative brass bed bolt covers. The posts begin with crisp turnings followed by a carved rice motif . This transitions to generously tapered & reeded post followed by additional leaf carvings, more ringlet turnings and terminating in flame finials. The bed has a flat top 4 piece tester / canopy system. The bed is a beautiful red mahogany color in great condition. This bed has a slightly different design than most plantation style beds. Traditionally they would have a more simple just straight foot board but this one has a nicely scrolled shaped foot board to match the headboard and improve the overall congruity of the design. The bed has faux wood metal rails with metal slats included for extra support. This queen bed measures 65 1/2" wide x 91" long x 90" tall.
