A traditional 18th century design, a rice carved bed is a highly sought after American staple. The earliest known examples were made in the Carolinas in the second half of the 18th century. The original gentleman to commission the design wanted the plants that gave him his immense wealth carved into the post. Rice and tobacco we're the most prevalent cash crops in the area at the time. Commonly referred to as simply plantation beds this example stands on block collared feet with decorative brass bed bolt covers. This bed was made by Councill Craftsmen and is signed on the horizontal headboard rail. The headboard is made from beautiful bold grain & book matched crotched mahogany veneers. The headboard is in a high gloss French polish and the bed is in wonderful condition. The posts are decorated with lambs tongue carvings, tobacco leaf & rice carvings, complex tapered reed carvings, & carved urn finials. The bed measures 64 3/4" wide x 87 3/4" long x 86 1/2" tall. The bed accepts standard queen sizes with an interior measurement of 60" x 80".
