We are pleased to offer for sale this wonderful 20th century Chippendale antique style king size rice carved mahogany plantation bed. A traditional 18th century design, a rice carved bed is a highly sought after American staple. The earliest known examples were made in the Carolinas in the second half of the 18th century. The original gentleman to commission the design wanted the plants that gave him his immense wealth carved into the post. Rice and tobacco we're the most prevalent cash crops in the area at the time. Commonly referred to as simply plantation beds this example stands on block collared feet with decorative brass bed bolt covers. The posts have carved urns with tobacco leaves, followed by a ringlet turning and additional leaf carvings. The posts then transition to a tapered reed carved design ultimately ending in fancy turned urn finials. The bed measures 90" long x 83 1/2" wide x 86" tall. The interior dimensions measure 78 1/4" wide x 82" long and will easily accomodate a standard king.
