20TH CENTURY CHIPPENDALE ANTIQUE STYLE KING SIZE RICE CARVED PLANTATION BED BY COUNCILL CRAFTSMEN
Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.
We're pleased to offer for sale this wonderful 20th century four post mahogany king size plantation bed by Councill Craftsmen in the Chippendale style. Founded in 1973 Fred & Hope Councill started a furniture company in North Carolina named " Councill Craftsmen". Using the most select materials the company focused on recreating timeless American furniture designs.
A traditional 18th century design, a rice carved bed is a highly sought after American staple. The earliest known examples were made in the Carolinas in the second half of the 18th century. The original gentleman to commission the design wanted the plants that gave him his immense wealth carved into the post. Rice and tobacco we're the most prevalent cash crops in the area at the time. Commonly referred to as simply plantation beds this example stands on block collared feet with decorative brass bed bolt covers. The posts are finely carved with tobacco leaves at the lower turning & rice carvings above. The posts then transition wonderfully to tapired reed carvings and a series of ringlets topped with carved urn finials. We continue to offer some of the finest period & 20th century beds on the market and have had trouble keeping stock. It seems as quick as we can get them listed they turn over. We're very excited to offer this king size mahogany Councill Craftsmen plantation bed. This came to us from a fine Short Hills estate and was greatly cared for in wonderful condition. We have iron L brackets that came with this to support the box spring but didn't attach them for the photos. This bed can be easily disassembled into parts for easy transport, freight shipping, & delivery. This bed accepts standard king bedding and measures 87" long x 82" wide x 87" tall.
