20th C Antique Arts & Crafts Tiger Oak Larkin Double Door Bookcase / Cabinet
Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic early 20th century antique Arts & Crafts Tiger Oak double door bookcase / China cabinet. We purchased this from a local Connecticut home and are almost certain this is a Larkin bookcase. Larkin started as a soap company in Buffalo NY and would include free furniture with large soap orders and eventually became a smaller version of Sears Roebuck with an extensive catalog just like Amazon. Unlike Amazon, Larkin manufactured most of their products in large factories in Buffalo and employed a large amount of people. The bookcase retains its original wavy glass doors and has 4 adjustable shelves that can accommodate a large library. The bookcase does still have its original lock, but this didn’t come to us with a key. We have a large stockpile of antique keys and we’ll be sure to match one up. The bookcase is in great condition with our only notes being a missing escutcheon, wear to the top, light wear on the bottom baseboard, and a few dry spots in the finish on the right side. This is probably the original surface, and it has developed a desirable crackling or “alligatoring” effect. This can be best seen around the doors and on the vertical stiles. The bookcase measures 39 1/2” wide x 13 1/2” deep x 54 1/2” tall. The interior has useable dimensions of 36” wide x 10 1/2” deep x 48 1/2” tall. Each shelf has 3 different height adjustments spaced roughly 2” apart.
