We are honored to offer you this most noteworthy 1872 watercolor maritime painting by well noted 19th century English born artist Sam Bough. Bough's paintings are all well represented and now realizing very substantial prices at major auction auction houses. Bough's works have been recently highly celebrated. Eulogized by Robert Lewis Stevenson, Bough followed his contemporary JMW Turner away from landscape portraiture into the realm of very significant seascapes. This 17 1/2" X 13 1/2" frame painting has a fabulous subject mater capturing the sea side with ship under sail, a powerfully amber colored cloud filled sky and two men working the shore gathering kelp. The painting is entitled "The Kelp Gatherers" painted by Bough for the widow and benefit of Mr. Holdings family. We are pushing the bounds of this sales platform's envelope daily and this is the first of about 30 powerful seascapes and maritimes we are releasing here. Bough's are still undervalued works with recorded sales realizing over 20,000 pounds and as noted on verso for one that was in dire need of attention. This specimen has some slight paper deterioration under the inspection but otherwise great. We are placing a nice easy number on this and see where it goes. It might pry loose some of higher tier art works. This paintings frame is of the highest quality and of great value on its own.
