Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.

We're proud to offer for sale this wonderful 19th century antique 18 drawer oak type makers file / cabinet by Hamilton MFG CO. Hamilton MFG Co was founded in 1880 by Edward Hamilton. In the mid 15th century Gutenberg is credited with giving the world movable type. From there on the process of type making and printing was big business especially so after the industrial revolution. Hamilton began making type for the Two Rivers Chronicle editor, William Nash, who needed an urgent order filled with no time to order from New York City. Hamilton's blocks printed so well he sent samples to other local printers and within 20 years became the largest type maker in the industry. As the business flourished Hamilton recognized the scarcity and demand for specialized cabinets to hold movable type and the associated tools. We generally find these with fitted drawers designed to hold smaller type. This cabinet has larger interior drawer divisions making it much more practical for modern use. This cabinet is decorated with double paneled sides and carved vertical stiles. All of the 18 drawers actuates with ease and retain their original handle stamped "HAMILTON MFG CO". Once an order was placed with the company these were an accoutrement added for an extra fee. This cabinet measures 23" wide x 23" deep x 35" tall.
