19th C Set of 4 Antique New York Victorian Renaissance Revival Parlor Chairs
Bay Colony Antiques is proud to offer for sale this fantastic set of 19th century antique Victorian Walnut parlor chairs. Advances in technology during the Victorian era made furniture cheaper to produce and more widely available to families of modest means. The majority of Victorian furniture, while well made, isn’t really worth enough for us to ship around the country. We pass up on so many good Victorian chair & dressers but there was no way we were letting this set go. These were clearly made in a top tier cabinet shop, probably in New York, which was home to some of the most successful cabinet makers of the period including Alexander Roux, John Belter, Thomas Brooks, Herter Brothers, Pottier & Stymus, etc. We’ve handled Roux pieces in the past with very similar carvings on the seat rail, but the crest is more in line with Brooks’ work. The chairs are in the Renaissance Revival style with a yellow brocade fabric. The upholstery is nice & clean and was masterfully done at a great cost to the previous owner. The fabric has a nice sheen to it and we believe it's mercerized cotton. The chair backs have a burled Walnut border with impeccable carving work on the crest. The center has bellflower & scroll carvings with a round cabochon with incised carvings. The ears have geometric flower carvings surround by stylized Acanthus Leafs which make another appearance at the bottom of the chair back. The front legs are turned with a dramatic flared cuff towards the top with petal carvings below. The front legs also have fluted carvings and are capped with brass caster wheels. The chairs are in excellent condition with our only condition notes being a couple of veneer chips on the seat rail of the chair on the far left in our gallery image, and a small veneer loss on the round cabochon on the far-right chair that we have a stand-alone picture of. We’d be happy to ask our restorer to patch the veneers if our end client wishes. The chairs measure 22 1/4” wide x 25 1/2” deep x 39 1/4” tall with a 17 1/2” seat height.
