19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE GEORGIAN MAHOGANY TEA CADDY
Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.
We're pleased to offer for sale this great 19th century antique mahogany tea caddy. This tea caddy is crafted from high grade imported Caribbean mahogany. In the 18th & 19th century mahogany was one of the most in demand woods with only rosewood bringing a higher price at market. Mahogany was harvested at an astronomical rate and exported to Europe & North America where it was very popular among cabinetmakers. Aside from it's signature sheen, the oil density in the tropical wood also makes mahogany insect & rot resistant. The box is decorated with a brass escutcheon and retains it's original brass hinges & hasp. The box is in wonderful condition with our only note being a slight warp to the piece of wood that would hold the sugar bowl. The box measures 9 1/4" wide x 5 1/4" deep x 5 1/4" tall.
