19TH CENTURY GEORGE III PERIOD CHIPPENDALE STYLE ANTIQUE MAHOGANY LINEN PRESS
Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.
We're delighted to offer for sale this great 19th century George III period Chippendale style antique mahogany linen press. This a two piece linen press with a lower section standing on a finely formed bracket base with a large base cock bead molded drawer with stamped brass back plates and pulls. The linen press has two magnificent and large santo domingan mahogany blank doors with exceptional grain and luster. Santo Domingan & Carribbean mahogany is the best in the world with special minerals & oil density giving a rare grain & natural sheen. Caribbean mahogany has been harvested to near extinction & is thankfully protected today. We did note some slight warping in the doors, this is an exotic wood in a foreign climate and large cuts such as this are especially prone to it. The warp in the doors happened many years ago and isn't at risk of becoming more dramatic. The previous owners had this in their family for 3 generations and had it expertly maintained & the interior retro fitted by Leonards for more practical modern day use. This was converted for use as a TV cabinet by the family and the lower cubbies held the cable box, DVD etc. The upper section has 3 carved floral rosettes along the cross banded mahogany inlay with a wonderful carved dental molding along the upper crown. We've attached a couple photos of the back and the bottom of the upper section to show the age & construction. This linen press is 49 1/2" wide x 22 1/2" deep x 73" tall.
