19TH CENTURY ANTIQUE VICTORIAN WALNUT DOUBLE DOOR BOOKCASE / RIFLE CABINET
Thank you for shopping with Bay Colony Antiques. We're a third generation family owned business furnishing homes all over the world. We aggressively pursue important antiques, decorative arts, and objects of interest for our most discerning clients.
With our highest compliments we're proud to offer for sale this choice antique walnut Victorian double door bookcase. This descended in our clients family over the last 100 years. In the late 19th century the family operated a general store outside of Buffalo, NY. A gentleman had fallen on hard times and couldn't pay his bill and eventually our clients grandfather settled the debt with the bartering of this stunning Victorian bookcase. The cabinet was housed in the general store where it spent many years as a rifle cabinet thanks to it's generous size.
The bookcase has two drawers at the base each fit with their own lock & key and original stamped Victorian hardware. The drawers actuate with ease and are decorated with beautiful burled walnut panels with incised carvings. The double doors open to reveal 4 adjustable shelves with an attractive salmon wash color on the inside case & shelves. The upper gallery is right off the charts with 2 high grade burled walnut panels with a highly sophisticated carved crest executed to perfection. The shelves have multiple height adjustments about every inch or so. This doesn't sound like a big deal but fixed shelves can be a real pain with a library of many different sized books. This is without a doubt one of the finest & cleanest Victorian cases we've had the pleasure of offering in some time and are certain one of our important Victorian collectors will give this a good home. The bookcase measures 43 1/2" wide x 16" deep x 76 1/2" tall.
